Job Summary

 

Directs the district-wide network systems maintenance and the planning, installation and maintenance of the District data and voice communication network hardware.

 

Scope

 

This position works in the area of information technology.  Work contacts include administrators, staff, outside vendors and manufacturers.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment and communication hardware and test equipment.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Supervises the positions of Telecommunications Technician, Network Services Technician, Lead Telecommunications Technician, Network & Telecommunications Planner, Programmer and/or other assigned staff.

 

Representative Duties

 

Directs the planning, installation and maintenance of the District data and voice communication network; analyzes data and voice communication hardware needs and requirements; develops and installs local networks to meet college needs; integrates local networks into district-wide network; develops and implements tactical plans for conversion of data and voice communications hardware; develops and maintains backup systems to ensure minimum down time; orders approved equipment ensuring cable and other connections are capable; researches and analyzes new products; trains and supervises business and staff in the service and maintenance of data and voice communication equipment; develops departmental policies and procedures; negotiates voice and data services; schedules installation and/or reallocation of equipment; maintains relationships with outside firms for parts and repair of modules; resolves problems related to service; analyzes hardware and recommends purchases of network and telecommunication equipment; maintains updated awareness of developments in data and voice communications hardware, computer systems test, maintenance equipment and procedures; responsible for budget planning for district-wide network and telecommunication needs; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: telecommunication systems; data and voice communications networking software and hardware.

 


Ability to: analyze, diagnose and correct problems related to communications equipment, analyze institutional data and voice communication hardware needs and recommend solutions; prepare and manage budgets; organize and prioritize workload; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a degree in information technology or telecommunication and/or experience in the maintenance of computer systems and data and voice communications networks with management or supervisory experience.
