Job Summary

 

Plans, directs, manages and implement technology services in the areas of hardware and software which may include the areas of computer operations, technology service and repair, help desk and cable infrastructure, and computer and networking systems.

 

Scope

 

This position works in the area of information technology.  Work contacts include administration, faculty, staff, students and community and business organizations.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment and a variety of computer hardware and software.

 

Supervision Received

 

This position reports to an assigned administrator; receives broad instructions as to goals and objectives in the area of responsibility; specific instructions regarding non‑routine and sensitive matters.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

Supervises assigned professional and support staff assigned to the maintenance of the network, computer equipment and software.

 

Representative Duties

 

Manages the operation and maintenance of the computer systems which may include the delivery of information over the internet, intranet and phone systems; develops and monitors the budget and the purchase of computer equipment; coordinates the operation of computer and networking systems in areas of student services, instruction and administration; assists in the development, maintenance and purchase of computer equipment, communication equipment and system software needed to run equipment; provides technical advice in selection of hardware, software and instructional applications and future technological applications; prepares reports and future projections for reporting and budget purposes; participates in formulation of a strategic plan for technology; may coordinate building construction or remodeling to develop educational specifications; may conduct program evaluation; maintains documentation for hardware and software; maintains liaison with external and internal clients; participates in other assigned projects and duties; performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

Knowledge of: project management; system software; networks, network protocols and network architectures; software engineering; programming and various programming languages; computer architectures; current trends in technology.

 


Ability to: build and manage project teams; organize technology staff to respond effectively to requests; work cooperatively with faculty and staff in the development and acquisition of software to support projects; promote service oriented programs; solve problems involving the use of technology; evaluate hardware and software; communicate technology issues in easily understood terms; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

 

Training and Experience

 

Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree in information technology or computer science and/or experience in project management in an academic setting.
