Job Summary


Directs complex and sensitive community relation issues, provides research, strategies and collaboration, and is the liaison to the external community on behalf of the Office of the Chancellor.


Scope


This position works in the Chancellor's Office.  Work contacts include a wide variety of businesses, community, governmental leaders throughout the state and country, and all levels of employees.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment. 


Supervision Received


This position reports to the Chancellor.  Because of the high volume of special projects and sensitive issues, consultation occurs frequently with the incumbent expected to complete projects independently after assignment. 


Supervision Exercised


This position may exercise supervisory authority, as well as provide work direction to office staff and consultative advice to a variety of administrators and staff throughout the District. 


Representative Duties


Represents the Chancellor to a variety of business, professional, community, and governmental groups, including local, regional, national and international economic development efforts, the Chamber of Commerce, the State Community College Board, and special interest groups; leads a variety of internal and external committees, task forces, and organizations relevant to District interests; performs speaking engagements to community on behalf of the Chancellor; evaluates and recommends legislative strategies for state and federal initiatives; negotiates for District in complex and sensitive issues; organizes special events; performs fact‑finding and troubleshooting activities in areas of special interest to the Chancellor and the District; provides liaison between the Chancellor and District Staff; may develop new programs to be turned over to operating units; keeps abreast of governmental and community affairs of interest to the District and provides strategies to the Chancellor; prepares and/or reviews correspondence and speeches for the Chancellor; assists in preparation and monitoring of Chancellor's office budget; performs related duties as assigned. 


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: educational, cultural, political, governmental and public relations issues relevant to the District's accomplishment of its mission; District structure and processes; public, local, regional, national and international community, business, and governmental organizations; state and federal legislative operations.


Ability to: represent the District and the Chancellor and influence a wide range of internal and external constituencies; lead events and activities within the District and the community; diagnose operating and public relations problems and develop appropriate strategies/recommendations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish exceptional working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be professional public administration experience in an educational environment involving significant contact with public and negotiations.


Special Conditions of Employment


Must be able to attend events on evenings and weekends. Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
