Job Summary
Plans, organizes and administers the instructional program
and related support activities of a college to meet the needs of a variety of
student groups.
Scope
This position works in the area of college instruction. Administrative responsibility may extend
beyond the area of instruction because the position functions as a member of
the college senior management team and may act on behalf of the College
President in the President's absence.
Work contacts include college and district administrators, faculty,
staff, students, representatives of other educational institutions, professional
organizations and community and business leaders. Equipment used includes standard office equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the College President; receives
broad direction related to college goals and objectives.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on location/department, may supervise the
positions of Associate Vice President,
Assistant Vice President, Director Institutional Planning, Research &
Effectiveness, Director Extended Campus, Director Continuing Education,
Director International/Intercultural Education, Curriculum Technician, Data
Entry Technician, Administrative Assistant, Department/Division Chairpersons,
Director Fiscal Operations, Manager Fitness & Wellness Center, Coordinator
Instructional Services, Coordinator Learning Center, Director Extended Campus,
Manager Extended Campus, Coordinator College Curriculum, Director Admissions,
Registration, & Records and/or other assigned staff.
Representative Duties
Acts as an advisor to the College President in matters
pertaining to instructional programs in the District; plans, directs and
evaluates college instructional offerings to meet a variety of student
community needs which may include occupational education, continuing/community
education and technology uses in instruction; provides college-wide leadership
for strategic and operational planning; coordinates college curriculum
development; serves as chair of College Curriculum Committee and college
representative to District Curriculum Committee; supervises and evaluates
department/division; chairs and oversees the supervision and evaluation of
faculty; recommends faculty and department/division chair hiring, dismissal and
granting of appointive status; promotes innovative approaches to teaching and
learning; chairs meetings of Division Chairpersons; coordinates faculty
professional development efforts; administers a wide variety of instructional
support services including library, audiovisual and learning centers; may
administer student services programs; provides leadership and administrative
direction for the college’s distance learning program; prepares and monitors
budgets; oversees the preparation of master class schedule and college catalog;
oversees development of grant proposals and administration of grant‑funded
programs; participates with other college administrators in planning student
recruitment/retention efforts; develops, supports and maintains liaison
relationships with business, industry and community partners; resolves issues
with student and faculty; serves as a member of the college senior management
team; performs related duties as assigned.

and related support activities; curriculum, program and staff development; at‑risk
and special needs students; the use of technology in teaching and learning;
assessment of student learning.
Ability
to: assess changing community educational needs and develop responsive
programs; supervise faculty and administrators in planning and delivering
instructional services; coordinate activities with a variety of college staff
and departments; prepare and monitor budgets; communicate effectively orally
and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons
contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree and experience in community
college teaching, curriculum development and management. Master's degree required; Doctorate
preferred.
