Job Summary
Plans, organizes, administers and evaluates occupational
education at a college to meet a variety of student, community and employer
needs.
Scope
This position works in an assigned area. Administrative responsibility may extend
beyond the area of instruction because the position functions as a member of
the college senior management team and may act on behalf of the College
President in the President's absence.
Work contacts include college and District administrators, faculty,
staff, students, representatives of business and industry, other educational
institutions, funding agencies, professional organizations and the public. Equipment used includes standard office
equipment.
Supervision Received
This position reports to College President; receives broad
direction related to college goals and objectives.
Supervision Exercised
Depending on
location/department, may supervise the
positions of Associate Vice President, Assistant Vice President, Director
Information Technology, Director Institutional Advancement, Coordinator
Instructional Programs, Coordinator Marketing & Public Relations, Manager
Fitness & Wellness Center, faculty, Administrative Assistant and/or other
assigned staff.
Representative Duties
Acts
as an advisor to the College President in matters pertaining to occupational
education programs in the District; plans, directs and evaluates occupational
education course offerings to meet the training needs of local business and
industry; coordinates occupational curriculum development; oversees the
establishment and staffing of employer advisory committees for each
occupational education area; develops and monitors budgets; recommends capital
equipment expenditures to the College President; coordinates construction
planning for college facilities; supervises and evaluates department/division
chairs and faculty; recommends faculty and department/division chair hiring,
dismissal and granting of appointive status; coordinates faculty professional
development efforts; coordinates occupational education programs with student
services such as career planning and placement, advisement and counseling; oversees
the development of grant proposals and administration of grant‑funded
programs; ensures that required records and performance are maintained for
specially funded programs; administers cooperative education programs; oversees
and participates in high school articulation efforts and other retention
efforts; maintains ongoing awareness of business and industry training needs
and current technology relevant to occupational education; participates in a
variety of college and district committee and task forces and serves as a
member of the college's senior management team; performs related duties as
assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge
of: current practices in the administration of occupational education programs;
curriculum and staff development; training needs of business and industry.
Ability
to: assess changing occupational education needs and develop responsive
programs; manage faculty in planning and delivering occupational education
services; coordinates activities with a wide variety of groups internal and
external to the college; prepare and monitor budgets; oversee construction
planning efforts; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish
cooperative working relationships with representatives of business and industry
and others persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
Training and Experience
Any combination of education, training and experience that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
An example of this would be a college degree in business or education
and experience in teaching occupational education courses, curriculum
development and management. Master's
degree required; doctorate preferred.
Special Conditions of Employment
Some positions may require a Class D Driver’s License.
