Job Summary


Depending upon assigned college, plans, organizes and generally directs student services and general operational programs in the areas of admissions and records, financial aid, student activities, child care, recruitment, career placement, maintenance and operations, counseling, athletics, security, adult re‑entry, veterans services, disability resources, special services and testing.  May oversee and evaluate community education programs, including off-campus sites, institutional advancement, alumni development and scholarship fund-raising.


Scope


This position works in the area of student services.  Responsibility extends beyond this area because the Vice President functions as a member of the college senior management team and may act on behalf of the College President in the President's absence.  Work contacts include college administrators, faculty, staff, representatives of other educational institutions, professional organizations and community business leaders.  Equipment used includes standard office equipment.


Supervision Received


This position reports to the College President; receives broad direction related to college goals and objectives.


Supervision Exercised


Depending upon assigned college, this position may supervise the positions of Associate Vice President, Assistant Vice President, Director Student Life & Leadership, Director Athletics, Director Campus Police, Director International/Intercultural Education, Director Learning Instruction & Assessment, Coordinator Native American Programs, Coordinator Student Success Programs, Coordinator Transfer Services, Coordinator Student Services, Counselor, Office Coordinator, Administrative Assistant and/or other assigned staff.


Representative Duties


Acts as an advisor to the College President in matters pertaining to student and community service programs in the District; administers and supervises the development of student services and various operational programs; recommends for appointment faculty advisors and supervisors for all student and college activities; directs and plans programs and services to promote student recruitment, college matriculation and retention; may plan, administer and evaluate community education programs; may oversee the institutional advancement efforts of the College with business, community and educational leaders, including scholarship fund-raising and alumni development; supervises, trains and evaluates assigned staff; prepares and monitors all budgets involving student, college activities and athletic programs; may prepare and submit the Student Handbook for publication; supervises research activities concerned with the evaluation, improvement and monitoring of student services programs; develops and implements student discipline procedures; consults with administrators and faculty to resolve student disciplinary issues to assure procedural fairness; may serve as the official college representative to the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference; maintains an ongoing awareness of constituents; performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities


Knowledge of: current practices in the administration and management of community colleges; student services programs; at‑risk and special needs students; state and federal statutes pertaining to higher education; budget negotiations and reallocations; conflict resolution.

 

Ability to: assess student needs; develop, evaluate and coordinate responsive programs; analyze and interpret data; manage assigned staff in planning and delivering services; coordinate activities with a variety of college staff and departments; prepare and monitor budgets; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.


Training and Experience


Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.  An example of this would be a college degree and experience in community college student programs.  Master's degree required; doctorate preferred.
