TITLE: LEAD COMPUTER OPERATOR

Job Summary

Supervises and advises computer operations staff and provides consulting assistance to programming, maintenance, and user personnel.

Scope

This position works in the area of Computer Services. Work contacts include administrators, faculty, staff, vendors, and the public. Equipment used includes a variety of communications and computer equipment.

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Manager Computer Operations; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters; specific instructions regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.

Supervision Exercised

Provides work direction to District Computer Operators I and II, and may provide assistance to computer operations staff at various college locations.

Representative Duties

Supervises assigned District operating personnel and oversees the operation of the computer system; troubleshoots computer operations problems; performs minor debugging procedures; reports malfunctions to maintenance personnel; provides assistance to District and college operating, programming, maintenance, and user personnel in on-going operations and in the development of new and updated programs and procedures; assists in networking between central site and colleges; ensures proper recording and storage of tape files; purges and deletes old files; maintains records of all system/equipment problems and utilization; schedules and adjusts computer usage to meet deadlines; ensures proper security and back-up procedures are followed; performs installation and removal of equipment; trains staff and student operators; oversees supply levels; performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: computer operations; a variety of hardware and software; job control language; networking between central and satellite sites.

Ability to: read and interpret technical manuals and usage documents; supervise staff; advise users and remote college staff; perform troubleshooting and minor debugging of computer system; install and remove equipment; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

Training and Experience

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. An example of this would be experience in computer operations with an emphasis in data processing. A college degree in computer operations or data processing is preferred.

Working Conditions

Positions in this class may require prolonged CRT viewing and may be required to lift up to 50 lb. objects. Some positions may require a Class D Driver's License.
