Getting Started

STEP 1: Ask yourself if you are conducting human subjects research.

Here are some questions to help you:

  1. Are you collecting data?
  2. Is the data going to be used for generalizable knowledge (e.g., presentations, publications)?
  3. Is the data about living people?

If you answered yes, you are probably doing human subjects research (HSR). You can learn more about the guidelines for human subjects research by completing relevant training.

STEP 2: Before completing HSR training, you need to obtain institutional approval from the college(s) Vice President of Academic Affairs either prior to or concurrent with completing your NIH training.

STEP 3: Complete training on human subjects research.

Maricopa Community College Employees: Complete the online training at http://phrp.nihtraining.com/users/login.php.

If you are not a Maricopa Community College Employee or Student:

PI's and co-PI's are asked to provide a copy of certificate indicating completion of training in human subjects research.

STEP 4: Contact the IRB Coordinator to request an eProtocol login ID.

Contact the IRB Coordinator and request a login ID to access the e-Protocol application system. The IRB Coordinator can be reached at (480) 731–8701, or at irb_office@domail.maricopa.edu. All Principal Investigators and co-Principal Investigators must request a login ID from the IRB Coordinator.

STEP 5: Complete the application form for HSR via eProtocol

Once you have a login ID and password assigned, login to the eProtocol system at http://mcccd.keyusa.net .

Note: When you log in, you will be able to create a new password. Be sure to make a record of your login ID and password so that you can return to the system at a later date.
