Infrastructure

A Helping HandAll of the major infrastructure projects that were started last fiscal year have come to completion with the exception of the Red Mountain Campus of Mesa Community College.

All other projects such as Phoenix College's Dalby Building, Glendale's new Science Lab/Classroom building, Scottsdale's Fitness Center and Math/Computer Science buildings, and South Mountain's High Tech Center are all completed and fully functional.

Mesa Community College's new Red Mountain Campus, located at Power Road and McKellips Road, is now 95-98% completed. This new campus was started the end of last fiscal year. High speed enhanced Category 5e cable has been installed on this campus, the first in the District to do so. This copper cable will allow for the introduction of Gigabit Ethernet speeds to the desktop whenever the campus is ready for it. The fiber optic cabling connecting the buildings is also in place and terminated. There will also be areas within the buildings and in outside patios/meeting areas that will have wireless connectivity to the network. With this new wireless technology, the fiber optic cabling, and the enhanced copper cabling, this campus is well prepared for virtually any new technology that is on the horizon.

There are several new projects that have started this fiscal year, albeit much smaller projects: District Office is remodeling the first and fifth floors with various departments moving. No new technologies will be implemented in these moves since this building was never "brought up to speed" in the first place. It will probably be when the new bond goes through that the District Office building will replace all of its outdated cabling systems. The good news is that the redundant or "protected path" that was started in June of 2000 is finally installed. This dual path will allow for 99.999% uptime within the Qwest network. Each path comes from a separate Qwest Central Office and enters the building in different areas, one comes in the front of the building, and one comes in the back of the building where the Rio Salado fiber enters the building. This should ensure that a fiber cable break should not affect our ATM network, since the break will automatically switch over to the redundant path. This little project has taken over one year to complete.

Rio Salado College will now be hosting the three radio stations; KJZZ, KBAQ, and SunSounds. The fourth floor is the new home of these stations with state of the art sound equipment. Completion of this project should be some time the middle of next year.

There are several other projects, mainly buildings that are being remodeled, but really have no new technologies associated with them. Chandler/Gilbert Community College is adding a new Performing Arts Center, Estrella Mountain Community College is expanding/remodeling the Komatke Hall, and Gateway Community College is expanding/remodeling their Instructional Building.
