Infrastructure

Pipe WelderWith the winding down of the General Obligation Bond funds, the infrastructure projects this year were much less expansive than last year. Several colleges have added buildings and others have just remodeled while some colleges have done both. Here is a brief summary of what has transpired this past fiscal year.

Glendale Community College

Again, Glendale had several projects working this fiscal year. A new Science Labs/Classroom building is currently under construction. This 31,000 square foot facility is located on the north side of the campus and will be wired to the existing network infrastructure with both fiber optic and high-speed data cabling. Along with this building, two other buildings, the Math Building and the Library Building are being re-modeled and re-cabled as well.

Glendale Community College North, a new campus for GCC on Happy Valley Road will be completed with several modular buildings sometime this summer. This campus is a joint project between Glendale Community College and Deer Valley Unified School District.

Mesa Community College

MCC is remodeling the old Library Building and the Life Sciences Building. With the completion of these, the main campus is almost finished.

Mesa Community College at Red Mountain is a brand new campus located on the northeast quadrant of Power Road and McKellips in Mesa. This 3 building campus will add approximately 75,000 square feet to our District along with re-modeling the old site of approximately 10,000 square feet.

The new site will be the beginning of the new "high tech" campuses. Along with running the new high speed copper cable called Category 5e, this campus is looking to install wireless computers in several areas. There is also the possibility that Red Mountain will be the first "full" campus to install Voice over IP as their primary phone system. For information on this new technology please see the Network Services section. Several details have yet to be worked out in this area. Looking for a July 1, 2001 completion date, there is much work yet that needs to be done.

Phoenix College

Most of the work has been completed at this campus. A new Administration Building and a classroom building called the Dolby Building are being constructed where the old Administration Building used to be. These buildings are being cabled the same way as their previous buildings, with the voice grade cable called Category 3 and the high speed data cabling, Category 5.

Rio Salado College

Several floors of the Rio Salado Building are currently being re-modeled. The music stations KJZZ, SunSounds, and KBAQ will be housed in part of the newly re-modeled building. Most of the cabling and infrastructure is already in place for this project but additional "specialty" cabling will be required for the broadcast studios.

When these projects are completed, this will account for approximately 95% of the planned construction projects. There are two Performing Arts Centers (PACs) that will be constructed in the near future. These PACs are being funded through a tuition increase. There will be very little voice and data cabling involved with these new buildings.

Scottsdale Community College

Two new buildings, a Fitness Center and a Math/Computer Information Systems Building, are nearing completion and should be ready for the fall semester. The Math/CIS Building is approximately 33,000 square feet and is located north of the "old" campus and south of the two new buildings that went up last fiscal year.

The Fitness Center will add another 26,000 square feet of building space to the SCC campus. It's amazing to see all of the data jacks in a Fitness Center but several pieces of equipment now hook up to the data network. With the addition of these two new buildings, the SCC campus looks like a new campus.

All of the inter-building cabling on this campus goes through a major tunnel system that is located beneath the old campus which in turn connects to the new buildings through a major conduit system. This same delivery system is used at Phoenix College also.

South Mountain Community College

A new 24,000 square foot High Tech Center is nearing completion at SMCC. Utilizing floor mounted voice and data jacks, this building consists of large open areas for computer labs.

The Student Services Building is being re-modeled along with an additional 15,000 square feet. The cabling in these buildings is consistent with the current cabling throughout the campus.

South Mountain College is also getting a "new" campus. The "old" campus at Priest Road and Guadalupe is being replaced with a new building located on the southeast quadrant of the two roads and east of its current location. Most of the square footage in this building is being dedicated to computer labs. A second phase is planned for the near future.
