Purpose
The Web Development team oversees the Maricopa and District websites, encouraging standard practices, consistent user interfaces, the use of web interfaces to save printing expenses and meeting time, and compliance with the general standards governing use of Maricopa computing resources. They have been key in encouraging ADA compliance for information provided via the web, and in development of interactive pages supported by database engines in the background.

Results / Impact / Costs
Increasingly, potential students and employees are researching their options via the Internet before approaching a school physically. Departments at the District Office have increased their use of the web to disseminate information, frequently offsetting or supplanting the use of paper printing, travel and/or telephone activity for like purposes. While it is very difficult to measure, best practices indicate that a pleasing and consistent user interface is at least as important as the content.

Staffing
In theory, two programmers support the Maricopa and District websites with intermittent support from their manager. One of the two programmers has been reassigned to the Quality Assurance team, hopefully to be replaced by an OYO employee. If the current trend continues to demand more functionality and reporting via the web, yet another FTE may be needed.

Future Issues
Communication with college web teams is critical to avoid duplication of effort. Server performance, as the web applications have grown exponentially, is an issue. A new server has been purchased to help alleviate the performance lags currently being experienced in some application areas, but tracking will be necessary in order to determine server expansion.
ADA compliance has become a necessity. Compliance ensures that all members of our student and community population can benefit from the information provided via the web. This is critical in on-line registration, Maricopa Online is compliant, as well as Internet delivery of course information. The Web Team has always had this component in its procedures, but few sites have adhered to these standards. An effort needs to be made, with appropriate management support, in order to bring all Maricopa sites into compliance.
