Campus Parking and Traffic Rules Update

When classes are in session, MCCCD colleges collectively experience traffic generated by more than 200,000 full- and part-time students and 8,000 full and part-time employees during the course of an academic year. That's not even counting the number of visitors, vendors and other community members who come on site. In addition to motor vehicles, pedestrian traffic, bicycles and skateboards, several college locations also have transit stops where local bus riders load and unload on-site. With so many people moving about, using different modes of transportation and having different arrival and departure times, safety is key.

Thus, managing a large and constant flow of traffic requires the establishment of regulations to help direct the safe and orderly movement of students, employees and visitors. The Parking and Traffic Administrative Regulation recently underwent a housekeeping review where changes were submitted through the open comment process and later to the Governing Board for adoption.

When it comes to motorized vehicles, each location in the district is unique in terms of the number of available parking spaces and the location of student, employee and visitor spaces. However, the administrative regulation outlines standards of operation that apply to all MCCCD students and employees. Areas that employees in particular should be mindful include:

Permits

Vehicle parking permits are issued to employees at all MCCCD locations. The regulation establishes the manner in which permits should be displayed - either the lower left front windshield (driver's side) or lower left back windshield (driver's side). On motorcycles, the permit should be affixed where it can be seen without difficulty on the front fender.

Visitor Parking

When attending college locations other than the primary duty post, employees should not park in visitor parking. Employees should park in either an available employee or student parking space at the college. When traveling to the District Office or Rio Salado College, employees should also avoid parking in visitor-designated spaces and instead park in available unreserved spaces in the parking garage.

Fines

There are approximately 15 parking and registration violations where citations are issued, with fines ranging from $15.00 - $50.00. Employees should become familiar with the penalties, which are approved as part of the Tuition and Fee schedule. The type of violations and fine amounts are listed in the Parking and Traffic regulation.

College Safety Department

The College Safety Department is charged with the responsibility for managing the flow of traffic as well as issuing citations when violations occur. Questions that involve employee or visitor parking at a specific college should be directed to the College Safety Department at that location.

News You Can Use

In the event that you receive a citation, the Parking and Traffic regulation also outlines the process for hearings and appeals. The regulation is posted in its entirety at the following link:
