Sexual
Orientation Included
in MCCCD Nondiscrimination Policy
In
addition to the areas where federal laws prohibit discrimination (e.g.,
race, age, gender, disability), the MCCCD nondiscrimination policy also
prohibits discrimination against students and employees on the basis of
sexual orientation.
Just as jokes or comments about a particular racial or ethnic group might
be considered derogatory and are prohibited in the workplace, the same
rationale applies to sexual orientation.
Language prohibiting discrimination based upon sexual orientation was
approved by the MCCCD Governing Board in 1992.
To discriminate against an MCCCD student either in admissions or treatment
in programs and activities--or against an MCCCD employee in such areas
as hiring, promotion, evaluation or termination--on the basis of that
individual's sexual orientation would constitute a violation of Governing
Board policy, and would therefore result in appropriate corrective action.
The Student Services Office at each college or center investigates complaints
by students related to unlawful or District-prohibited discrimination.
Employees may file complaints through the MCCCD EEO/AA office. Information
on complaint procedures, as well as complaint forms can be obtained by
calling 480-731-8885.
