Technical Requirements:
Operating System
The service works best on a Windows 2000 or XP operating system. Please check these instructions if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed to see how you can configure it to chat with the librarian. Some advanced features of the service may not be available when using a Mac.
Browser
Currently the software we use works best using an Internet Explorer browser version 6 or higher. For optimal interaction via the software when using Internet Explorer have your session cookies enabled. Other browsers, including Netscape, Firefox, and Safari should allow the librarian to chat with you and send web pages to your screen, but may not allow sharing of database pages. Opera, AOL, and WebTV are not supported.
Firewall
If you have a software firewall enabled, such as Norton Internet Security, you may not be able to see chat from the librarian after you connect. If you experience such a problem, please exit the service, and, if you wish to reconnect, either disable the firewall before you return, or check these instructions on how to configure it to work with our service . Remember to re-enable the firewall after the session is over!
Internet Connection
A minimum 56k modem connection is recommended.
Virtual Machine
Most computers come with a virtual machine (Java engine) from either Microsoft (version 1.1.4) or Sun Run Time Environment 1.4 or 1.5. If your computer does not have the VM installed you can download from Sun Java.
