Trial Databases Fall 2006

Access to the following trail databases have been turned off.

These databases are being considered for subscription in the future.  The review process for database additions occurs twice a year, once in the fall, and again in early spring.  Please let us know what you think of these resources in the comments form below.

For access to databases that require a username and/or a password, please contact the reference desk at your college library.  You may submit multiple comments.

  • ABI/Inform Complete (Proquest)

“ABI/Inform provides in-depth coverage of business conditions, trends, corporate strategies and tactics, management techniques, competitive product information, and a wide variety of other business topics.”  Coverage is from 1992 forward with a backfile coverage spanning 1971 to 1992.  Also includes information on about 200,000 companies.  ABI/Inform Complete “… offers access to over 3,800 journals with over 2,800 of those avialable in full text.”

“ABI/Inform Global covers more than 2,700 current sources, including full-text coverage of over 1,700 titles.”

“ABI/Inform Research covers more than 1,600 current sources in the business and management arena including full-text coverage of 900 titles.”

  • African American Experience (Greenwood)

Greenwood's African American Experience is "the definitive electronic research tool for African American history and culture….”  “The two primary goals: to provide information from authorities in the field, and to allow African Americans to speak for themselves, through a wealth of primary sources from their first arrival in the New World to the present day. Topics include: History, Biography, Literature, The Arts, Music, Pop Culture, Folklore, Business, Slavery, Civil Rights, Politics, Religion, Sports, Education, Science & Technology, and more."   Contains over 4,000 interviews with former slaves as well as several texts published between the late 1700’s to the early 1970’s  from Negro University Press.

  • AnthroSource (American Anthropological Association)

“AnthroSource is the premier online resource serving the research, teaching and professional needs of anthropologists.”  Coverage is over 100 years of material including current issues for 15 of the American Anthropological Association’s (AAA) peer-reviewed journals, electronic archive of all AAA journals.  AnthroSource links to content stored at JSTOR, accessible to JSTOR subscribers.

  • Consumer Health Complete (EBSCO)

Consumer Health Complete “… provides content covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to complementary, holistic and integrated medicine.”  Topics included are aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, men’s, women’s and children’s health.   Content ranges from consumer health encyclopedias and reference books to 4,100 full text health reports for the lay person covering diseases, conditions, injuries and procedures.  This database is the most comprehensive collection of alternative health information.  5,000 Spanish language health reports and health newswire service are also included.   Animations, images, and streaming video are expected to be incorporated as well.

  • Daily Life Through History (Greenwood)

Daily Life Through History includes access to over 40 print volumes focusing on the daily life of dilfferent cultures and countries through history.  In addition, the database provides access to evaluated web links, primary documents, maps, and illustrations.  Areas covered include domestic, political, recreational, religious, material, intellectual, and economic life.  Chronologies and timelines also supplement the content.

  • History Reference Center (EBSCO)

Including more than 270,000 entries focusing on history, the content of the History Reference Center includes more than 300 reference books and encyclopedias, 58,000 historical documents, 43,000 biographies, and more than 100,000 images and historical maps.  It also includes cover-to-cover full text for 50 history periodicals.

  • Issues in Focus: Understanding Controversy and Society (ABC-Clio)

Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society “provides comprehensive coverage of 150 of the most studied controversial issues with more added each year.”  The database includes over 4,000 entries with scholarly research by experts as well as primary source documents and images and audio-visual files.  “Content is written, selected, and organized … to help students understand and analyze the topics, guiding students in framing their own questions and supporting them in drawing sound conclusions about the issues.”

  • Lexis Nexis Academic (LexisNexis)

LexisNexis Academic includes 350 newspapers from the U.S. including NY Times back to 1980 and Washington Post back to 1977; over 400 magazines and journals; broadcast transcripts from major TV and radio networks; business/financial sources such as SEC filings and reports; legal research tools such as Shepard’s Citations for all U.S. Supreme Court cases back to 1789 as well as other courts and federal laws from 1988 to the present.

  • Literary Reference Center (EBSCO)

Literary Reference Center “… includes more than 10,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews; 75,000 articles of literary criticism; 130,000 author biographies; full text of more than 300 literary journals; 500,000 book reviews; 25,000 classic and contemporary poems, over 11,000 classic and contemporary short stories; full text of more than 7,500 classic novels (anticipated by Fall 2006); over 3,000 author interviews; and over 1,000 images of literary figures.”  Included in the database are more than 500 books from the Bloom Series published by Chelsea House as well as MagillOnLiterature Plus from Salem Press.

  • Nature Magazine (Nature Publishing Group)

“Nature is a weekly international journal publishing … peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology.”  “In 2005 Nature generated nearly 10,000 more citations than in 2004, and 26,000 more citations than its closest competitor, making it the world's most highly citated multidisciplinary science journal.”

  • World Cultures Today (Greenwood)

World Cultures Today covers the arts, food, clothing, lifestyle, religion, holidays, language, and the worldview for countries of the world.  In addition to providing online full text access to the content of more than 38 print titles from Greenwood and Praeger publishers, the database also includes maps and illustrations and web links.  Links are for English, Spanish and French sites.  In addition to searching by subject, you can also browse by region, country or topic.

  • World Folklore and Folklife (Greenwood)

World Folklore and Folklife “… traces the origins and development of all aspects of traditional cultures around the world.”   Coverage includes myths, foodways, campus legends, proverbs and sayings, music, urban legends, comparative religions, folk and fairy tales, medical folklore, and literature.  Organized by subject and region/country, special indexes also include subject access and tale type.  In addition to folk and fairy tales, other resources include “… web links, multi-media sites, video and audio files, maps and images.”
