The Eight Authors of the Maricopa Project

Scott Adamson
Hi, I’m Scott Adamson. I am one of the many transplanted Arizonan’s originally from northern Minnesota. Growing up in Minnesota, I learned to love sports; basketball, tennis, ping pong, football, baseball, and bowling--all things that I can do year around in Arizona! I enjoy keeping up with the Suns, Cardinals, Coyotes, and Diamondbacks, but am still a Minnesota Viking fan deep down inside.

I left Minnesota in August of 1986 after completing my Associates Degree from Itasca Community College (Grand Rapids, MN) to attend Northern Arizona University in the much warmer climate of Flagstaff, Arizona. Upon graduation from NAU, I began my high school teaching career in Payson, AZ. After 3 years in Payson, I moved to Chandler, AZ where I continued teaching high school mathematics, earned a Master’s degree from NAU, and began teaching in the evenings at Mesa and Chandler-Gilbert Community College. During the summer, I work for Intel Corp. and work on making humorous video based math lessons to motivate students. Using the guise of Cal Clulus and Jim "The Rule Man" Baylor, I try to bring practical applications and problem solving into my classroom. Using this style of teaching in the classroom has earned me the award of State Finalist for the Presidential Award in Mathematics Teaching, the Phoenix Suns Arizona Educator, and the Intel Innovations in Teaching Award. In the fall of 1998, I began teaching full-time at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Currently, I am taking classes at ASU that will lead to a doctorate in research in mathematics education.

I am a current member of NCTM, AMATYC, and ArizMATYC and have presented at regional and national conferences. Look for the latest installment of the Rule Time video series at the NCTM Regional in Phoenix in December or at the NCTM National in Chicago in April.

When I am not doing math, I love to do things with my wife (Kim) and 4 children (Andrew ~3p, Matthew ~2p, Kayla ~3p/2, and Zachary ~p/2). I also try to get in a few hours of tennis every weekend and watch as many sporting events as my family allows. Luckily, my children are also sports fiends, so we usually win out! I am also involved in the drama, music, and children's ministries at Word of Faith Family Church.
