Sets and Logic

This module introduces students to the concepts of sets and logic that may lead them to further study on these topics. It provides students with initial, positive experiences and applies the information to practical situations. This module includes extensions designed to encourage students to research a mathematical topics and to solve non-routine problems that will require communication and critical thinking.

Lesson 1

Set for Life
This lesson introduces the student to the mathematical notation and concepts of sets that will be used in this module.

Lesson 2

Picture This
Students create Venn diagrams to depict the elements of a set, the relationships among several sets and the relationship of these sets with the universal set.

Lesson 3

Survey Says…
In this lesson, students conduct a survey and organize the data collected in a Venn diagram.

Lesson 4

Count Your Chips
This lesson will connect the logical operators learned in previous lessons to the world of semiconductor manufacturing.

Lesson 5

Learning to Reason
This lesson provides an introduction to formal logic. It will provide the background information, vocabulary, and symbols that will be used in future lessons.

Lesson 6

Propositional Calculus
In this lesson, students learn to calculate the validity of a proposition, or statement, using truth tables.

Lesson 7

Logical Applications
This lesson is designed to apply and refine the student's ability to use truth tables.

Lesson 8

Seek and You Shall Find
This lesson uses the context of searching the Internet and the knowledge of the logical connectors AND, OR, and NOT to efficiently search the Internet.

Lesson 9

Computer Logic
Students use their ability to construct truth tables to determine the function of a network of logic gates.

Lesson 10

More or Less
This lesson introduces students to the algebra of inequalities in one variable.
