TO THE READER. . .

This document represents the Maricopa Mathematics Consortium (M²C) work-in-progress on developing a comprehensive mathematics curriculum for all levels from arithmetic through college algebra and trigonometry.

The content is a compilation of ideas and suggestions from multiple sources:

• work accomplished during Summer 1994 by the Structure and Content  Teams of M²C;
• suggestions and input from mathematics faculty at various events (the May  1994 Mathematics Retreat, the M²C December 1994 survey, the January 1995  mathematics all-faculty meeting at Phoenix College, the January 1995 M²C  All Teams meeting, Spring workshops by Sheldon Gordon, Pamela  Matthews, and Jack Robertson, the May 1995 Mathematics Retreat);
• comments and suggestions given by Maricopa mathematics faculty  members at department

meetings at several campuses during March 1995;
• comments and advice received from mathematics educators across the  country;
• work accomplished during Summer 1995 by the Curriculum and  Evaluation Teams of M²C.

It is hoped that this document will stimulate discussion among those interested in mathematics education.  Please review it thoughtfully and share your reactions with your colleagues.  Anyone who would like to participate in further developing this proposal is welcome.
