| Many of the most intertesting and most informative programs that we
broadcast on MCTV during regular daytime hours, as well as overnight,
come to us via the Annenberg Media organization. You may have previously
seen some of these programs on PBS or other educational or public access
television stations.
Annenberg Media was known previously as "The Annenberg/CPB
Project" because of its close work with the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting, the parent organization of PBS (the Public Broadcasting Service).
The original project was created in 1981 through a gift from media magnate
and former Ambassador to the Court of St. James's, Walter H. Annenberg,
in conjunction with additional funding from the CPB, and merged in
1999 with "The Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project" (created 1990).
In 2004, Annenberg/CPB became part of The Annenberg Foundation,
later changing its name to Annenberg Media.
The Annenberg programs carried on MCTV were previously
recorded from the Annenberg Channel — a digital satellite
channel which was permanently discontinued October 1, 2008. Through heroic
efforts on the part of our technical staff during the the last 3 months
preceding the final termination of the satellite service, over 60 videocourses,
(comprising in excess of 800 hours of licensed digital television media),
were downloaded from satellite, digitally encoded and added to our broadcast
library, providing our viewers continuing access to these exceptional materials
for years to come.
As a result of this unprecedented effort, MCTV currently broadcasts
one of the most complete schedules, each month, of the greater majority
of programs available from Learner.org, the web-based video source
and support hub surviving the original satellite service. And many of these
courses are licensed for broadcast on MCTV well into the next decade...
and some even further.
Annenberg Media uses media and telecommunications to advance
excellent teaching in American schools. This mandate is carried out chiefly
by the funding and broad distribution of educational video programs with
coordinated web and print materials for the professional development of
K-12 teachers. It is part of The Annenberg Foundation and advances
the Foundation's goal of encouraging the development of more effective
ways to share ideas and knowledge.
Annenberg Media's multimedia resources help teachers increase their
expertise in their fields and assist them in improving their teaching methods.
Many programs are also intended for students in the classroom and viewers
at home. All Annenberg Media videos exemplify excellent teaching.
