Wireless Network

The wireless network installed in the District Office building is available for use by anyone with a DSSC domain account. If you can logon to the "Maricopa" or "DO" domains you should be able to use this wireless network. MCCCD staff from other campuses can be granted temporary access to the DSSC wireless network by contacting the District Office Helpdesk. All of the Cisco 1200 series Access Points have an 802.11b (the most common WiFi compliant) radio. These are connected to the District LAN via an open source proxy server, NoCat, that handles authentication and accounting.

To connect to the District wireless network you will first have to obtian the SSID and WEP key from the District Office Helpdesk department. They can simply provide the information or assist in setting up a new wireless profile for you. Once the information has been configured correctly and the wireless network is visible all that you have to do is launch a web browser and bring up a non-District web page, Maricopa.edu for instance. Once the NoCat server "sees" this connection attempt it will redirect your web browser to the authentication page where you will be prompted for your domain username and password. You must answer yes to the warning windows that appear or you will not have the opportunity to be authenticated.

Once you have completed the authentication procedure you will have the same Internet access as you would if you were directly wired to the District LAN. From the user's perspective a wireless network is very similar in operation to a wired network. Network shares such as printers and file servers can be accessed and you can install these shares on your wireless device with the same interface that you do on a wired device.

If you are a frequent visitor to the District Office and work for one of the Maricopa Community Colleges ask the District Office Helpdesk about the possibility of setting up a more permanent solution.
