Community College Baccalaureate
|
| |
On Tuesday, March 30th the Faculty
Executive Council hosted a retreat to discuss the most recent
legislative issues regarding the community college baccalaureate.
The panel was composed of four individuals uniquely qualified to
discuss this issue, including: Bob Salmon, the executive director of
ACCA; Kim Sheane, policy advisor to the Speaker of the House -
Jim Weier; Matt Ortega, the MCCCD Director of Government Relations and
External Affairs; and MCCCD Vice-Chancellor Debra Thompson. After
considerable discussion, the FEC agreed to lend our support to HB 2079,
in concept. A letter of support went to the legislators who would
be voting on the bill. FEC membership did note that there
were areas of concern for faculty, including issues regarding funding ,
but that we would be interested in collaborating with legislators in
the future regarding public policy development. Click to read the
letter of support and to read Dr. Glasper's response to our letter.
In
addition, it is important for faculty
to remember that support for this bill simply would allow community
colleges to begin offering four-year degrees. How Maricopa
decides to proceed with this potential change to its mission will still
involve many discussions at both the district and college levels.

Meet and Confer
|
|
The Faculty Meet and Confer Team is
still in negotiations with the Administrative Team regarding salary and
benefits. The Team will advise you of the final decision as soon
as it is agreed upon. Many of our other proposals have been
tentatively agreed upon and can be found at the Faculty Association
Home Page. |

Pick-A-Prof
|
|
The Pick-A-Prof
website
has requested grade distribution reports for all professors and courses
at MCCCD for the fall 2004 semester under the Arizona Public Records
Law. In compliance with the Arizona Public Records law, this
information would be released to them.
What will be released is a series of reports that will include an
instructor's name, the course abbreviation , the course number, and the
breakdown of the grades for that course. (# of A grades, # of B
grades, # of C grades, # of D grades, # of F grades, and # of
withdrawals.) This is a substantial request since MCCCD offered
over 17,000 course sections with over 6,000 instructors in just the
fall of 2004. |

Faculty Leadership
|
|
|
|
With local Senate, FEC,
and Meet and Confer Team elections soon to begin, please consider how
you might contribute to faculty leadership at your college.
Maricopa is well-known by its richly diverse and vibrant faculty.
Faculty who love to teach! But there are so many issues at both
the college and district level that directly impact the experience of
both teaching and learning. Take a look at the Faculty
Association webpage to review all of the committees that need active
faculty representation. Many of this year's current
representatives may not be able to serve in 2005-2006. Please
volunteer for a committee that you have a particular interest in
and you'll be glad you did. It truly is a pleasure to
serve the Maricopa Faculty.
Enjoy
Arizona's delightful spring weather!
