2004-2005 Year in Review

The past year seemed to fly by!  It has been my pleasure to serve the faculty of Maricopa Community Colleges.  Before I turn over the Presidency to Jamie Moore, I want to review some of the major issues that your Faculty Executive Council contributed to this year.

12 month pay
One of the most significant accomplishments this year was the option for residential faculty to transition to a 12-month pay schedule.  An informal assessment of those in Human Resources report that 4 of 5 faculty who attend Open Enrollment opt for the new 12-month pay schedule.  This option has been on the drawing board for several years, so FEC was delighted to see the schedule provided for faculty.

ASRS & Legislative Issues
In the fall the faculty leadership worked with the Arizona State Retirement System to remedy a change that negatively impacted only 9-month faculty in the state of Arizona.  This problem was resolved after much collaboration between FEC, Jamieson & Gutierrez (the faculty’s lobbying firm), ASRS, the Arizona Legislature and Governor Napolitano’s office.  In the spring FEC membership took a trip to the Arizona Legislature and met with Senator Linda Gray for an informal conversation regarding Maricopa faculty and our willingness to be a resource to the state legislature on issues regarding the community colleges.

Instructional Council Retreat
In the fall the Faculty Executive Council hosted a retreat for the chairs of all of the Instructional Councils.  Those in attendance were anxious to discuss issues in common with all the instructional councils, as well as interested in a follow-up retreat next year.

Community College Baccalaureate
In the spring FEC membership participated in a retreat regarding the Community College Baccalaureate Bill, which was making its way through the Arizona State Legislature.  If the vision for a community college baccalaureate evolves into reality, faculty must stay informed and actively involved in the issues that such a change will bring to Maricopa.

Capital Bond

The overwhelming public support for Maricopa’s $975,000 Capital Bond must be viewed as a vote of support for the faculty and the work that we do for students.  The Faculty Association’s lobbying firm issued public statements in support of the bond.
  Faculty Representation at District

The Faculty Executive Council worked with Chancellor Glasper to provide faculty representation on all major district committees and councils.  These included hiring committees for:

  • the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Information Technologies,
  •  the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources,
  •  and the Director of Government Relations.

The faculty took the lead in the development of the new Maricopa Faculty Internship program, as well as participated in the new Faculty of Color Recruitment and Retention Committee.  Faculty are currently working with Human Resources to implement a model for faculty recruitment.

In addition, FEC members represented the faculty-at-large on the following:

  •   the Maricopa Integrated Risk Assessment Council (MIRA),
  •  the Financial Advisory Council (FAC),
  •   the Technology Resource Committee (TRC),
  •  the Technology Advisory Council (TAC),
  • the Employee Benefits Advisory Council (EBAC),
  •  the Strategic Planning Advisory Council (SPAC),
  •  the Diversity Advisory Council (DAC),
  •  the Faculty Professional Growth Policy Review Committee,
  •  the ASU Alliance,
  •  the College Safety Committee,
  • and the list goes on and on!
Governing Board Meetings & Strategic Conversations

The Executive Committee of the Faculty Executive Council, comprised of the FEC President, President-Elect and the 10 College Senate Presidents, regularly attend the biweekly MCCCD Governing Board meetings and/or Strategic Conversations. This academic year each of the 10 colleges was provided time to present faculty and student accomplishments to the board.   In the fall the faculty led the Strategic Conversation on shared governance.  Next year FEC hopes to be involved in a spirited discussion of academic freedom.
  Governing Board Communication

As the MCCCD Faculty Association President, I served as the spokesperson for FEC to the Governing Board on a number of important issues including:

  • a letter in support of Chancellor Glasper’s vision for Maricopa and his collaborative leadership style, support of the MAT reclassification study and its implementation,
  • support of the $5 tuition increase, and
  • support of the Community College Baccalaureate bill in the state legislature.

And finally...

I would like to thank all of the faculty for their hard work , support and dedication to the students of MCCCD.

Have a much deserved summer vacation!
