GCC Process
A Staffing Comm. is established by the deans of Inst and St
Serv & senate pres.; faculty can request, but, lately, we try to rotate
folks on and off. To help comm. members make tough decisions, the DI
sends a message such as:
During our meeting today, we will be discuss the criteria that was used
last year is listed below:
1: What are expected
departmental/discipline enrollment trends for
existing offerings?
2: What are expected
departmental/discipline enrollment trends for
anticipated new offerings?
3: What are the most pertinent
staffing issues facing your discipline/
department?
For example:
Availability of part-time faculty
Residential faculty release time
Day overloads for residential faculty
Evening schedules for residential faculty
FTSE / FTE departmental anomalies
Early retirees
4: Have residential faculty vacancies
occurred in your department
this year or do you expect to have residential faculty vacancies
next year?
5: What other circumstances warrant
special consideration?
6: If your department includes more
than one discipline , how does
your staffing request fit into your overall residential faculty
staffing needs within your department.
7:
Summarize how you have utilized the residential faculty positions you
have allocated within the last three (3) academic years 00/01, 01/02,
02/03).
Chairs come to the committee with their "pitch" and then committee
members rank (usually one volunteers to create a spread sheet), discuss,
and decide. The committee recommends to the pres., who, unless there is
compelling reason not to do so, usually accepts
