Student Complaint Process and Use of E-Mail

Council discussed the issue of students circumventing the student complaint process and sending e-mails to everyone stating their complaints.  Teresa Toney from the District Office, who is the ombudsman for Maricopa, contacted one Council member and inquired about one incident.  Discussion was held about the handling of the incident.  Council was told that Teresa Toney had disclosed that similar incidents of students using e-mail and circumventing the established student complaint process.  Council learned that Teresa Toney was writing a report to give to the Legal Department and the Chancellor recommending that to change the administrative regulation regarding the student complaint process.  It was stated that the drafted language to clarify and set up specific procedures would be brought to FEC for review.  A concern was stated that new language would just set up a procedure for another already established procedure.  The point was made that the established process was already outlined in the student handbook and the RFP.  Another point was raised that administrators need to be reminded of the established process and tell students and parents of students to follow that process.  Council further discussed these points.
