Faculty Hiring Cycle

Council was reminded that staffing committee meetings had been moved to the spring and that updated information on the number and type of positions was supposed to be given on September 15th.  Council members were asked if the September 15th deadline was causing a problem at any of the colleges.  It was stated that the administration would provide this information to the faculty staffing committees by September 15th of each year.  Council learned that one college had gone to two staffing committee cycles, one in the spring and one in the fall.  The point was made that it is imperative to return to the agreement to move up the hiring cycle and remind college presidents of their commitment to that agreement.  Council was told that one college president received the staffing committee recommendation last spring and appears to be making efforts to respect the staffing committee's recommendations and the September due date.  A concern regarding the timeline of the hiring cycle was raised.  It was stated that while some colleges are committed to hiring faculty, all positions at every college needed to be filled as soon as possible.  A point was made that the staffing committees are supposed to be told which positions to post by September 15th, so that hiring can begin in the fall and final offers made in early Spring.  The goal of moving up the hiring cycle was to hire the best faculty, which is not always possible if hiring takes place in the summer.  Sandra stated that she would forward information on the faculty hiring cycle to Council.
