A concern was raised regarding faculty members serving on hiring committees formed by administrators. Sandra Stuebner reminded Council that faculty representatives needed to be appointed by Council if they are to serve as the faculty voice on a committee. Sandra explained that two situations occurred in which two Vice Chancellors had asked faculty members to serve on hiring committees and then asked Sandra to approve the choices. Sandra stated that she had stopped the process and explained to both Vice Chancellors that they should get Council's approval first, and then, if approved, invite the faculty member to serve on a hiring committee. She said that one Vice Chancellor was concerned with a Council-approved faculty representative for a particular hiring committee because of a potential conflict of interest. The Vice Chancellor asked that two names be forwarded in order to be able to choose the faculty member. Discussion ensued. The point was emphasized that Council appoints faculty to represent the faculty voice on all District committees. A suggestion was made to tell the Vice Chancellors to recommend faculty to Sandra first. Another suggestion was to form a pool of faculty who would be willing to serve on hiring committees and choose from the pool to get well-rounded representation. Sandra asked who would be willing to serve on the hiring committee discussed earlier. Dennis Shaw volunteered to serve and asked about the meeting schedule. Sandra replied that the meetings needed to fit the faculty members' schedules. Discussion focused on resolving the potential problem of opposing views. It was suggested that the committee look for the best person for the job.
