October 6th Instructional Council (IC) Chair Retreat Report

Naomi Story told Council members that they had copies of notes in their folders from the IC Chair Dialogue that occurred on October 6th.  Sandra Stuebner stated that over twenty people attended the dialogue.  Council was told that everyone attending participated in the discussion on Instructional Councils issues and concerns.  Naomi said that those who participated are looking forward to the next meeting.  Jeff Ricker informed Council that the purpose of the dialogue was to improve communications and relations with the Instructional Councils and to help them in their roles as IC members.  Council discussed improving the language concerning curriculum in the Residential Faculty Policies (RFP) in the near future.  Discussion focused on the interpretation of the word "responsibility" in the RFP.  Sandra stated that Dr. Solley had inquired about the meeting and asked that Sandra share the results with her.  Council learned that the dialogue results were good and identified that the IC Chairs want to meet again to address the issues and concerns raised.  Council heard that the joint IC meetings in the past were well attended at first; however, attendance at the joint IC meetings had dropped.  One Council member shared an opinion that during a faculty-only dialogue, IC Chairs could more openly share concerns.  Council discussed the consensus that faculty own curriculum and need to decide the programs and courses.  The point was made that given anticipated enrollment at 400,000 students in the near future; faculty must retain ownership of the curriculum.
