Legislative Report

Dana Tranberg of Husk Partners gave a legislative report to Council.  First, she said that there have been no cuts to community colleges for the 2008 budget.  However, in the 2009 budget there will be a reduction in capital outlays for all state community colleges and Maricopa's cut will be approximately $2.8 million dollars.  Dana clarified that the budget deficit for 2008 is $1.2 billion dollars and the projected 2009 budget deficit will be $1.9 billion dollars.  Dana was asked what to impact would be for taxpayers.  Dana said that bonding for the school could possibly happen with the Governor's support but the Legislature opposed that idea.  Dana stated that the Concealed Weapons bill has not moved forward and law enforcement and educators oppose the bill.  Dana reported that this was the last week to hear bills and this is the time when "strike everything" bills start to appear.  Dana discussed three bills in the Higher Education Committees and their prospects for moving forward.  She did mention that the textbook bill passed out of committee and is waiting to go to the floor for a vote.
