Reyes Medrano reported on the following items:
Convocation - Reyes shared a draft of a letter that he wanted to send to all faculty regarding Convocation. The letter stated that the January 2008 and Fall 2008 Convocations would be replaced with a teaching and learning event that would be held in Fall 2008. The letter stated that January 4, 2008 was still a day of accountability and faculty needed to show up for work. Council reviewed and made some revisions to the letter. Council consented for Reyes to send out the revised letter. Armed Officers - Reyes said that the new Director of Safety will start at the end of the month. When he is in place, the District will begin writing regulations for officers to carry guns at the colleges as well as for lethal and non-lethal weapons. Also, policies will be written for training procedures, etc., for people who are trained to carry guns. Council was told that the Chancellor wanted to proceed with caution to ensure that all issues, policies, and procedures are covered correctly and fully. Maria Harper-Marinick/Visits to Faculty Senates - Reyes asked the Senate Presidents to invite Maria Harper-Marinick to come visit with their Senates in order to discuss issues and concerns. Council discussed curriculum and how it is faculty-driven and should be placed under the Instructional Councils' direction, and also that new Instructional Councils should be created for new courses. Common Pages was also discussed.
