Council listened to a concern about one way Arizona State University is attempting to gather more students. Many ASU students don't have the necessary math skills needed and ASU has contracted with one Maricopa community college to have that college's faculty go to ASU to teach math classes at ASU to bring those students "up to speed" with their math skills. Council heard that the Maricopa faculty teach the students and the Maricopa College gets the FTSE. Council was told that time is counted as part of the faculty member's accountability. A question was asked if the students register at ASU or at the Maricopa College. Discussion ensued that this was hurting the Maricopa Community Colleges. Council learned that another Maricopa college and ASU had co-enrolled students for lower level classes and ASU had just "pulled the plug" and said it was taking over the lower level classes completely. Council agreed that Council needed to review the report of the entire process to see what is going on. A point was made that it was cheaper for ASU to pay a Maricopa faculty member than a graduate student to teach classes. A report will be brought to Council's next meeting.
