Mrs. Nancy Stein began her second term as MCCD Governing Board President on Tuesday, January 8, 2002. Confirming a long-standing commitment to teaching and learning, Stein's comments at the January 22nd Board Meeting referred to fairness, student success, and a focus on policies of diversity, hiring, safety, student services, and fine arts. Mrs. Stein brings greetings to the faculty and shares these thoughts:
"The start of a new year offers new opportunities and a freshened resolve to do better, both for others and ourselves. As Board President for 2002, my number one resolution is to help increase opportunities for all Maricopans, students, faculty, and staff. We can help MCCD realize its potential by prioritizing the following:
Providing budget parity gives smaller colleges and learning centers the same level of resources as the larger colleges. However, the Board must see that the larger colleges
continue to receive the support necessary to maintain their current levels of service.
Honoring diversity by demonstrating respect for others is necessary to advance any group effort. To build a higher-performing organization, everyone needs to know that each staff member and every
student brings something valuable to MCCD; we should recognize and celebrate this fact.
Fostering student interest in their education is important because we lose too many students who come to us. Whether they give up before the semester is over or don't return after a final exam, we might examine reasons why students choose not to continue at our colleges. While we cannot nor should not take responsibility for each student who drops a course or fails to complete a program of study, we should encourage students to continue their education and value learning.
"These issues are about fairness and respect; together we can achieve measurable progress in these areas. I look forward to working with all of you and wish everyone a successful year."
The Faculty Association welcomes Mrs. Stein and wishes her a wonderful and productive year.
