One of the finest accomplishments of the Faculty Association, and the most important, is the re-establishment of our PAC. It is our goal not only to become a voice at the State Legislature, but also to become a united voice with which to be reckoned. Faculty need to position themselves to be creating legislation, becoming proactive in directing the future of education in this state.  Instead of merely tracking bills, we should be writing them!

What can you do to help?
First, join the Legislative Committee or the PAC. Anyone interested should contact Doyle Burke or Mark Klobas.  Second, realize that YOU are our most effective lobbyists. Take time to choose just one or two issues that matter most to you, and then get to know your state representatives. Contact them and then hold them accountable. Representatives can check to see whether you are a voter or not and will listen most attentively to those who are.  What, specifically, can you do?

  • Do write a personal letter addressing your specific concern. Try to include the name or number of the bill in which you are interested. State your support or opposition clearly. Organize colleagues to do the same. Legislators take some of their best talking points from these letters and are empowered when they can say that a large number of constituents are concerned.
  • Do include your name and address and a contact number. Let your legislator (try always to focus on those who represent your district) know you expect a response. If you don't get one, persist. If you still don't get one, elect a new legislator!
  • Do ask your legislator's preferred method of correspondence. Many prefer personal letters, some email and others like personal calls. Use that method and establish a relationship.
  • Don't use blanket e-mails or form letters. They are less effective.
  • Don't be uninformed! Send your personal e-mail addresses to Carrie Taylor at the district. She will be sure it is forwarded to the legislative committee.
