The SMCC faculty wish you a most successful and productive 2004.

Reflecting on the achievements and activities of 2003 brings both sweet and bittersweet memories.  We have been excited to see the range of creativity of colleagues, and saddened by the loss of some good friends and associates.

Like all of our sister colleges, the growing enrollment at SMCC has brought an even greater sense of our impact on students' lives as we see their growth and development inside and outside our classes.  We have applauded the acceptance of our students, Erica Braza and Edgar Martinez, into the Bridges to the Baccalaureate Biomedical Research Program at ASU-West, and Laura Begay and Reylynne Williams, new interns at the Department of Energy and Sciences at the Pacific National Northwest Laboratories in Richland, Washington.

Through the actions of biology faculty, Marshall Logvin, and institutional researcher, Susan Starrfield, SMCC received a grant to establish a new state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory.  Dynamic Learning faculty, Yvonne Montiel and Jackie Jaap, have joined with colleagues at Phoenix College in assisting in the development of the new joint Teacher Prep Charter High School.  Peter Facciola, communication faculty, hosted the second annual Peer Mediation Conference this fall.

We have rejoiced in the realization of a long-time dream, the completion of the SMCC Performing Arts Building.  Another phase in the history of SMCC begins as theater faculty, Julie Holston, develops this expanding program, and music faculty, Jerome Garrison, presented the 16th annual Messiah to a packed house in December.  Henry Rose, music faculty and concert pianist, treated many to a display of his talents at his Rose 'n Rood performance in October.

On the athletic circuit, the men's golf team finished second in the nation at a NJCAA golf tournament.  We are proud of the achievements of all of our athletes both in competition as well as in their scholastic performance; many received Academic All-American certificates.

So many individuals perform such magnificent work that it would be impossible to mention them all here.  Therefore, please accept my apologies to those not named.

Once again, best wishes for 2004.

Jill R. Seymour, SMCC Faculty Senate President 2003-2004
