Mesa Community College at Red Mountain Launches New Family Discovery Series



MCC's new Family Discovery Series is designed for families to learn more about science in an informative and entertaining manner. Each month, college instructors will share their knowledge and insights on several fascinating topics inside Red Mountain's unique Saguaro building. By attending these presentations, families will develop a deeper appreciation for science, with an emphasis on the environment. All presentations are free and open to the public.

  • September 25, Saguaro Building Lobby, 7 p.m.
    Meet and Greet the Animals of the Sonora Desert – Krya Perry
    Join us in learning about some of the amazing animals of the Sonoran desert and their incredible adaptations to desert living.

  • October 16, RAP Centre of Saguaro Building, 7 p.m.
    Rock Art of the Southwest – Dr. Niccole Cerveny
    Join us for an introduction to and discussion of rock art images of the Southwest. Learn about the exciting rock art research currently happening at MCC.
  • November 20, RAP Centre of Saguaro Building, 7 p.m.
    What You Don't Know About Bats! – Dr. Andy Holycross
    Explore the amazingly different ways that Arizona's 28 species of bats make a living in our state's diverse habitats. You will be introduced to the equipment biologists use to study bats as well as some stuffed bats! Myths and mysteries regarding bats will also be discussed.

    20 Weather's Greatest Mysteries Solved – Dr. Randy Cerveny
    Arizona State University professor Randy Cerveny brings past weather to light in a new book that shows how weather played a major role in key turning points in history. Along the way, he plays the role of history's detective in piecing together clues to reconstruct major turning points of our past and to project the weather into the future.

    Saving Wild Cheetahs: Education vs. Guns and Bullets – Dr. Dennis Wilson
    A mother cheetah is shot dead. Why? What of her unborn cubs? This is the story about a journey from Arizona to Africa to examine how conflict between people and wildlife is crushing the planet's biodiversity.

    Saving the Planet – One Building at aTime – Dr. Alex Cheroske
    Come find out the cool ways our new Saguaro building was planned and constructed to be eco-friendly and what you can do to help the environment yourself.

    The Life and Habits of Rattlesnakes – Dr. Andy Holycross
    What would it be like to spend a day as a rattlesnake? We'll help you imagine slithering a mile in their skin! What's the world look like from your new point of view? Many sensory modalities are lost, but you have new ones! What cool new tools (adaptations) has evolution provided to help you grow and reproduce?
