GATEWAY DESIGNATED A HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTION

Awarded a $2.7 million Title V grant by US Dept. of Education to enhance student success, services & academics

PHOENIX, Arizona – GateWay Community College has received official designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. With the HSI designation the college was awarded a $2.76 million Title V grant to enhance and expand programs for the colleges' diverse student population.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, a Hispanic-Serving Institution is defined as a non-profit institution that has at least 25 percent Hispanic full-time equivalent enrollment.

"GateWay is honored to be recognized for our service to this important and growing student population," said Dr. Jolyne Ghanatabadi, vice-president for academic affairs. "Access to federal grant funds will greatly enhance our ability to provide vital support services and help more students realize their education goals."

The grant will be applied in three core areas: student persistence and course completion; student preparedness for academic success; and student services. A data collection and tracking system will be implemented to provide information on student progress.

These goals will be accomplished through a detailed implementation plan that includes: expanding course options and delivery formats; establishing a Writing and Math Center; increasing learning resources and services; expanding intrusive advisement services; and establishing a data collection and tracking system to track and assess student success.
