"Where Fashion Becomes Art: The Mannequin is Our Muse"

Original Works of Art on Display at Scottsdale Fashion Square, Oct. 15-18

Fashion never stands still. So it's with a smidge of irony and a larger portion of fun that Scottsdale Fashion Square is celebrating fashion's many facets – and the opening of its major new expansion on Oct. 15 – with art works made with the immutable, and immovable, icon of fashion: the mannequin.

The ordinary mannequin is turning out to be an extraordinary canvas for creativity, with more than 100 original art works set to be on view as part of the Grand Opening celebrations for Scottsdale Fashion Square's new Barneys New York and 100,000 square-foot expansion, October 15-18.

This unique art exhibit on display in the department store courts throughout the shopping center will feature the artistic expressions of retailers, designers, artists, media and community members, including Simon Doonan, creative director for Barneys; ; Janis Leonard, interior designer; Susan DiStaulo, designer; The Arizona Republic; and Where Magazine.

Mesa Community College Fashion Design students will participate in this display. The students came up with the idea to design a collection of mannequins called "Urban Angels" to reflect the lives everyday people. MCC Fashion Design instructor Evonne Bowling took her students to a thrift shop to buy their supplies. The series includes: A full-time mom/full-time student, a soldier, a doctor, and a rock star.

"Just as fashion is such a personal expression for our shoppers, The Mannequin is Our Muse lets retailers and some of the Valley's own notables express what fashion means to them via this fun and unusual platform," said Kate Birchler, senior marketing manager at Scottsdale Fashion Square.

The top five mannequins, as voted on by Scottsdale Fashion Square shoppers, will be displayed at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art's (SMoCA) museum store through October.
