Creative-writing competitors to face off at GCC slam event
Glendale Community College (GCC) hosts its annual Poetry Fiction Slam from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, providing students, members of the public and others opportunities to present poetry, short stories, essays, song lyrics and other types of creative writing within a competitive environment.
The event is scheduled in the Student Union on GCC's main campus, located at 59th and West Olive avenues in Glendale. Registration forms for contestants are available in advance in Room 114 of the HT2 building, in the English Department offices in the O5 building or by emailing david.nelson@gcmail.maricopa.edu. Forms also will be available at the event. All contestants must check in between 6:30 and 6:50 p.m.
A poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry, placing a dual emphasis on writing and style of delivery. Judges rate the content and performance of each presenter. This slam event extends to other forms of creative writing.
Contestants in the GCC event may enter and perform up to three pieces of writing and are limited to three minutes to present each piece. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.
The event is being presented by The Midnight Metaphors, GCC's Creative Writing Club. Views expressed during the competition solely are those of the artists and audience and not shared necessarily by the college of the Maricopa Community College District.
