SCC's 5th Annual Iron Pour
Iron Pour Draws Sculpture Artists to Scottsdale Community College on November 14
Scottsdale, AZ (October 26, 2009) – Scottsdale Community College sculpture students and faculty will gather on the SCC campus the morning of Saturday, November 14th for SCC's 5th annual Iron Pour.
The Iron Pour is a unique art event that represents the culmination of months of preparation on the part of students and faculty. The Iron Pour is free and open to the public, and will be held behind the SCC Art Building (AB) (map: www.scottsdalecc.edu/maps/scc_campus_map.html). SCC is located at 9000 E. Chaparral Rd., Scottsdale.
SCC's Iron Pour will serve as a demonstration pour following a 2-day Art Foundry Conference at ASU sponsored by the American Foundry Society. ASU Foundry students will be working alongside SCC students to melt and pour all the foundry molds.
"We expect a good crowd of out of town artists and well as former students," said Ted Uran, SCC sculpture faculty and director of the Iron Pour. "We anticipate pouring approximately 2,500-3,000 pounds of cast iron."
For months, SCC students have been collecting cast iron scrap that will be melted down in a large blast furnace constructed by Uran, heated to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit, and transformed into glowing liquid metal to be poured into prepared molds and turned into unique works of art.
"The work will get very intense as the pour date comes close, breaking iron and coke and measuring out 50 pound charges to melt in the furnace," said Uran.
Kickoff of the event will begin with the cupola burn – the lighting of the furnace at 7am, with molten iron resulting around 10am. The Iron Pour event is expected to end at 1pm.
Following is the SCC Iron Pour schedule:
From 8am-1-pm, scratch blocks will be available for purchase. Guests can create a personal 5" by 5" cast iron tile by scratching their design into a sand mold for a cost of $10-$15 each.
Feel free to bring your friends and family to this spectacle of melting and pouring white hot liquid iron. Don't forget your cameras and feel free to tell your friends. T-shirts will be available in a variety of sizes.
