Maricopa's first telecommunications improvement project installed voice, data and video infrastructure, network devices, new private branch exchange (PBX) systems, voicemail and video codecs at 9 colleges between 1985 and 1988. Telecommunications Improvement Project II (begun in 1996) is under way and is focused on upgrade and replacement of voice, data and video cabling, network devices, and telephone systems, district-wide. This project will upgrade and replace voice, data and video cabling and communication equipment for the existing campus buildings and add cabling and communication equipment to serve 1,000,000 square feet of additional classroom and office space which is being added to the colleges in the district as a result of the 1994 bond election. District ITS and Purchasing departments have combined their efforts to facilitate the acquisition of the equipment and cabling necessary to renovate the MCCCD voice, data and video network. College involvement is fundamental to the success of the selection and installation of infrastructure components, equipment and phone systems at all locations. Telecommunications Improvement Project II encompasses major communications infrastructure renovation at 10 colleges, the Maricopa Skill Center and the District Support Services Center.
