Transfer Week 2008

Applying To A University

It is never too early to make contact with your transfer institution. Be sure to visit your college or university, attend any transfer events, or orientations that are offered, and make contact with an advisor or representative early in your planning process.

Being admitted to your transfer college/university is generally a simple process that includes the following steps.

Apply for Admission (paper or online)
Submit your application for admission as early as possible, usually two semesters prior to transfer. Waiting until the priority deadline may be too late for some majors.

Request Official Transcripts
Have transcripts sent directly from your community college and all other colleges/universities you have attended to the transfer college/university. High school transcripts may also be required. If you have completed the AGEC, or an associate’s degree, be sure it has been recorded on your transcript before having it sent. Do not wait until your classes are completed to send transcripts. Your application will be evaluated on the coursework you have completed to date. When all of your coursework is complete, have a final transcript sent.

If you are applying to an institution with competitive admission, you may need to submit additional items such as ACT, SAT, or other test scores, a personal statement or admissions essay, letters of recommendation, documentation of volunteer, service and leadership activities, and awards/honors received.

If you receive any letters or email communications from your transfer college/university, be sure to read and respond right away. If you are denied admission or experience any difficulty with the transfer process, contact the, Advisement/Transfer Center for assistance.

Once admitted, you should attend any orientations or admissions events that are offered. Follow procedures and meet with an advisor as soon as possible to select and enroll in your first semester courses. Classes fill quickly in some programs.

In addition to college/university admission, you may need to complete other steps.

Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships
Generally this involves completing the FAFSA and should be completed as soon as possible after January 1. You do not have to be admitted to your transfer college/university before completing FAFSA. Be aware of priority deadlines. Scholarships often require personal statements or essays and letters of recommendation.

Apply to your Major/Program
Some majors and professional programs have a separate admission process. Be aware of requirements and due dates.
