Architecture and Construction

The construction industry comprises establishments engaged in the construction of buildings or engineering projects. This can include new work, additions, alterations, or maintenance and repair of structures. Major sectors within the construction industry include residential, industrial, and commercial construction, heavy and civil engineering construction such as utility systems, streets, highways, and bridges, and specialty trade contractors in areas such as framing, masonry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, and flooring. The construction industry in Greater Phoenix employs approximately 150,000 people, making it larger than the region’s manufacturing sector. The population of Greater Phoenix is projected to increase to 5.8 million by 2025 - an addition of nearly two million people. This population will require new residential and nonresidential buildings and infrastructure, necessitating the continued need for a large construction sector in the Greater Phoenix region.

The Maricopa Community Colleges offer degree, certificate, and apprenticeship programs in construction trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and roofing. In addition, programs are available in construction management, inspection, civil engineering, surveying, architecture, and computer aided drafting and design.
