Mr. Kiefer joined the Center for Workforce Development in July 2001 and works with economic development, community and industry groups to ensure that college programs meet the existing and emerging workforce needs of the region’s employer community.

Steve's areas of responsibility include the biosciences, business services, information technology, sustainability (green careers) and public safety programs. Mr. Kiefer is a former member of the board of directors for the Arizona BioIndustry Association and current member of AZBio’s Greater Phoenix Leadership Group.  He is a member of the Arizona Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee and is Maricopa’s designated liaison to the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).  Steve serves as statewide coordinator for the Arizona Retail Management Advisory Board.  He is Maricopa’s designated representative to the Central Arizona Life Safety Council for fire science and emergency medical programs.  Additionally, Steve volunteers his time as a civilian member of the Arizona Department of Public Safety Critical Incident Review Board.

Mr. Kiefer is affiliated with the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and the Arizona Association for Economic Development and attained his professional certification (CEcD) from the International Economic Development Council.  Steve participates in regional business attraction efforts to highlight the importance of a well-trained workforce in corporate location decisions. He is also active in business retention and expansion efforts for communities within the Greater Phoenix region.

Mr. Kiefer has held a variety of administrative assignments within the Maricopa Community College system dating back to 1996, including Director of Recruiting and Corporate Relations, Director of Corporate and Government Programs, and Budget Analyst. Previously, he served in multiple roles during his seven years at the Arizona Department of Public Safety, including financial controller, police planner and training instructor. In addition to his government experience, Steve spent many years in the private sector, holding sales, marketing and operations management positions in retail and business services industries. He completed his MBA with honors at Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University and is an honors graduate of Arizona State University.
