Manufacturing
Automotive repair and maintenance includes general vehicle repair as well as services in specialty systems such as exhaust, transmission, electrical, body, paint, interior, and glass. Occupations in this industry sector are not merely limited to the repair and maintenance of automobiles, but also motorcycles, RVs, and heavy transportation equipment such as trucks, buses, and other diesel powered vehicles with industrial and construction applications. As all vehicles become increasingly sophisticated and imbedded with electronic controls and components, the need for skilled technicians to repair and maintain these machines will continue to grow.
The Maricopa Community Colleges offers a variety of programs to train automotive professionals to meet the growing needs of the Greater Phoenix region. Degree and certificate programs are available through the Maricopa system in areas such as automotive technology, diagnosis, air conditioning, engine performance, drive trains, suspension, steering, brakes, and electrical systems. The manufacturing sector in Greater Phoenix can be divided into three major sub-categories:
- High-Tech Manufacturing: The manufacture of high-tech equipment such as computers, semiconductors, electronic instruments, and communications equipment.
- Aerospace: The manufacture of aircraft, aircraft engines, rockets, missiles, space vehicles, and navigation equipment for both the military and civilian markets.
- Other Manufacturing: All other manufacturing areas, including food and metals processing, clothing, chemicals, furniture, machinery, electrical, and transportation equipment manufacturing. Although the products of these industry sectors might not necessarily be high-tech in nature, they can nevertheless be manufactured using high-tech methods and processes.
The Maricopa Community Colleges offer a variety of manufacturing programs in disciplines such as aerospace, automated systems, CAD technology, drafting, electronics, machining, and management.
Greater Phoenix High-Tech Manufacturing Workforce Study
In December of 2005, the Battelle Memorial Institute’s Technology Partnership Practice released a report on the future of the high-technology manufacturing industry in the Greater Phoenix region. Co-sponsored by the Maricopa Community Colleges, the report was designed to identify ways in which high-tech manufacturing jobs can remain and grow in Greater Phoenix.
