Supporting a Community of Ideas

At Maricopa Community Colleges, freedom of expression is not simply a constitutional obligation, but a living practice that defines who we are as a learning community.

As the nation’s largest community college system, serving over 140,000 learners annually across 10 colleges, we believe education thrives when people can explore ideas openly, think critically, and engage with one another with dignity and intellectual curiosity.

What Is Free Speech?

What is Free Speech?

Maricopa Community Colleges recognizes that free speech and freedom of expression are essential to cultivating critical thought and developing an informed citizenry.

These principles align with the vision articulated by the Truman Commission, which emphasized education as the foundation of a thriving democracy—calling on every learner to think critically, communicate respectfully, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Free Expression in Action

Our commitment is to protect lawful expression, foster open inquiry, and strengthen civic learning, so our colleges remain places where dialogue replaces division and learning overcomes isolation.
