The Maricopa County Community College District’s Governing Board has seven seats, including five elected positions from geographical districts within Maricopa County and two at-large positions representing the entire county. Board members serve staggered four-year terms.

Message from the President

Mr. Laurin Hendrix

As we look forward to a new season in the Valley of the Sun, I am honored to serve the students, faculty, and staff of the Maricopa County Community College District. During the past few months, I have been privileged to meet many inspiring people in this unique community. I have witnessed amazing fine arts performances, concerts, and films. I have seen students harness the power of electricity, build impressive projects from metal, and navigate confusing legal documents. I shook the hands of new graduates as they were the first in their families to earn a diploma.

I have reflected on the importance of each person who made these experiences possible: dedicated educators who inspire their students, administrators and advisors who help them formulate goals, and maintenance employees who create a safe learning environment. Everyone, from the Chancellor to the booster volunteer, is part of a team that leads this great college district as it accomplishes one incredible goal: making education a reality.

I believe that education truly is for everyone, regardless of background, age, or interest. Learning is not something that stops when a student hangs a diploma on the wall. It continues throughout life, and this is demonstrated by the thousands of women and men who return to take another class, gain a new skill, earn a new degree, and make our state a better place to live. 

We are fortunate to be led by Chancellor Maria Harper-Marinick, who has a vision for our colleges that puts students first. I am inspired by her commitment to empower them with knowledge and opportunity. The strength of the Maricopa County Community College District is its people. Our faculty and employees are second to none and I appreciate your hard work.

One of my goals for the coming year is to utilize the wealth of employee talent to increase public awareness about the great programs that are available in our colleges. The ideas and skills we need are right here in our community. You know what we do best and what we can do better, and I will depend on you to share your talents and knowledge. When we attract more students who seek to enrich their own lives, everyone in our great state benefits.

Terms

Board members are elected in staggered years to four-year terms.

Upcoming elections

The next election will be held in November 2018. Districts 3 and 4, and one At-Large position will be up for election. For information on the election process for Maricopa County, check out the Maricopa County Recorder’s website at Candidate/Campaign Information Center: Maricopa County.

Meetings

Board members routinely meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month (except July) to direct the activities of the District under powers given them pursuant to Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) §15-1444. Public notices of board meetings are posted outside the Governing Board Room located on the second floor of the District Support Services Center. They are also posted on the Governing Board website under menu option Notice of Public Meeting. The schedule of meetings for the calendar year are under menu option Current Meeting Schedule.
