Maricopa Community Colleges Provides Many Exciting Global Learning Opportunities

Study Abroad Programs

Maricopa Community Colleges offers study abroad programs that allow students to earn credit abroad through our colleges, while experiencing other cultures, environments, and languages.

The Global Scholars Distinction Program

The Global Scholars Distinction Program is a chance for Maricopa Community Colleges students to be celebrated and recognized for international and intercultural learning. This program was developed to support a world-class learning experience for students.

*Note: This program is only available at Glendale Community College and Paradise Valley Community College.

Requirements

  • Globally Intensive Courses—9 credit hours
    • Maricopa Community Colleges courses designated with a “G” (Global) tag designation (e.g. COM263, ASB102, SOC270, etc.)
    • Maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average in all coursework
  • International/Intercultural Co-Curricular Activities: 12+ clock hours from the options below
    • Attend approved international/intercultural events taking place at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges or other colleges/universities
    • Participate in one-credit “study away” courses offered by Maricopa Community Colleges
    • At the GSDP Director’s discretion, students may be able to participate in curricular or co-curricular programming with an indigenous peoples focus
  • Global Immersion (select one option):
    • Service Learning Experience—1 credit hour (scholarships may be provided for this tuition)
    • Engage in a global service learning experience by completing a 1-credit service- learning course such as COM/REL/SPA 282 AA
    • Course requirements include 50 hours of documented time of service learning (community service) with an organization that is globally focused and serves international populations (immigrants, refugees, scholars, international students, etc.)
    • At least 75% of these hours will be face-to-face while engaging with people the organization serves
    • Study Abroad: Participation in a Maricopa Community Colleges program (3 college credits or more)
  • Capstone Project: Learn by Sharing
    • Create a digital project that highlights the global learning that took place
    • Attend the Global Scholars Distinction Recognition Event

Community College Initiative (CCI)

The CCI Program provides participants from traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups with a one-year, non-degree academic program at a U.S. community college. The program is designed to build technical skills, enhance leadership capabilities, and strengthen English language proficiency. Continued opportunities include possible professional internships, service learning, and cultural exchange through community involvement.

The Global Leadership Retreat

The Global Leadership Retreat brings together up to 100 international and domestic students from all ten Maricopa Community Colleges to engage in a weekend immersion program for global leadership training.
