Arizona runs on people, and Maricopa Community Colleges is in the people business. The state’s warm, dry climate is one reason people living with respiratory conditions and diseases relocate, increasing the demand for well-trained respiratory therapists.

Healthcare in Arizona remains one of the state’s fastest-growing sectors, projected to grow by nearly 30% by 2030. As the state’s most integrated healthcare education system, Maricopa Community Colleges offers more than 70 healthcare programs, including respiratory care, to close the workforce gap.

A New Path: Reskilling for a Healthier Arizona

Kimberly Moreno represents the growing number of Americans changing careers—64% switched occupations between 2022 and 2024. After working five years as a pharmacy technician, she decided to return to college to pursue a different healthcare-related career. On a personal mission to help others breathe easier, she enrolled in GateWay Community College’s Respiratory Care program. Moreno chose the college for its affordability and graduated debt-free in 2024.

Building Lasting Bonds

Today, Moreno is employed at Montecito Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation, where she helps her patients breathe more easily and continue living their best lives. Working with residents of the long-term care facility allows Moreno to see her patients weekly and build a deeper connection with them.

“Everybody with lungs can use respiratory therapy at some point or another,” she added. “I feel like I change people’s lives every day.”
