A nationwide trend of rising college enrollment at two- and four-year institutions highlights a renewed focus on the long-term career and financial value of a postsecondary education. As the spring semester begins, Maricopa Community Colleges is seeing enrollment growth for the 12th consecutive semester, welcoming back a record number of Arizona residents. The latest enrollment spike comes as U.S. college enrollment surpasses prepandemic levels.
“Our continued enrollment growth reflects our system’s mission in action,” said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor. “Students are choosing our colleges because they offer affordable and accessible pathways that ultimately change lives. We know that many of our graduates go on to work, live, and lead right here in our local communities, helping strengthen and fuel the state’s growing economy.”
The Big Picture
American confidence in two- and four-year institutions has risen to 42%, reflecting a strong belief in the value of a college degree. A recent report on the State of Higher Education finds that 91% of bachelor's degree students are confident that their degree will equip them with job-related skills. Furthermore, a 2025 survey conducted by the American Association of Colleges and Universities shows employers are placing more weight on degrees when making hiring decisions. The survey also found that 85% of employers believe colleges and universities prepare students well for the workforce.
Enrollment is on the Rise
With over 600 offerings, including microcredentials, certificates, associates, and 11 bachelor’s degrees, Maricopa Community Colleges serves as a critical access point for Arizona families seeking a higher education. As the Spring 2026 semester begins, enrollment is up over 8%, and the system is projected to welcome back nearly 100,000 students. This marks the system’s 12th consecutive semester of enrollment growth, with more than 90% of the students residing in Arizona. Among those enrolled, more than 8,600 students are pursuing bachelor’s degrees, more than 25,800 are high schoolers taking dual enrollment courses, and over 47,000 are first-generation college students.
“At a time when so many are weighing financial decisions, students need to know that earning a college degree is going to benefit them in the long run,” continued Chancellor Dr. Gonzales. “In a competitive job market, knowing that your degree pathway has career placement and future progression is extremely important. Community colleges are workforce developers, so our job is to help students create the connection point between the degree and real-world job opportunities.”
A Focus on Career Readiness
As the region’s leader in workforce development, Maricopa Community Colleges provides work-based learning that prepares students through practical, hands-on experiences. Clinical experiences, internships, service learning, and employer-partner apprenticeships are helping students gain the real-world skills that hiring managers are seeking.
In addition to experiential learning, employers value candidates with microcredentials; with 81% noting a candidate’s possession of a digital badge or certificate positively influences hiring decisions. As early adopters of microcredentials, Maricopa Community Colleges offer specialized, bite-sized learning in high-demand fields, including Behavioral Health and Healthcare, Data Analytics, IT Fundamentals, Semiconductor Technician, and Workforce Professional Skills. Microcredentials have increasingly become the choice for those seeking to gain focused skills to help advance their careers or move quickly into the workforce, with 9 in 10 students viewing microcredentials as a key to job success.
The Value of a Degree
The return on investment of a certificate and degree remains high as college graduates continue to outpace high school graduates in average earnings. Looking ahead, projections show that by 2031, 67% of all jobs in Arizona will require education or training beyond a high school diploma. A study by the Helios Foundation and Education Forward Arizona found that a bachelor's degree can significantly boost earning potential, with graduates earning $1.5 million more in a lifetime. Additionally, increasing postsecondary enrollment by 20% could generate more than $5 billion in annual economic gains for Arizona.
