Graduation, Commencement, and Convocations

Graduation, Commencement, and Convocations

Congratulations! You have achieved a major educational goal and will soon be graduating. As the big day draws near, there are several steps you need to take to graduate on time as well as participate in commencement and convocation ceremonies.

Graduation and Commencement

So, what is the difference between graduation and commencement? Graduation is the official awarding of your degree by your college once it has determined that you’ve completed your degree requirements. Commencement is the graduation ceremony your college hosts to celebrate your achievement.

For more information about graduation requirements, visit your colleges' graduation web page.

Steps to Graduating and Participating in Commencement

  1. Verify your graduation application deadline with your college.
  2. Pay any fees that may apply.
  3. Order your cap, gown, and announcements if you plan on attending.
  4. Pick up your cap, gown, and announcements.

Costs

  • There is no cost to apply for graduation.
  • You must pay any outstanding balances, fees, or campus traffic fines before you submit your graduation application. Your college will not award your degree or certificate until you have paid any outstanding debts.
  • There may be a $25 fee to participate in the commencement ceremony. Please verify with your college if you plan on participating in the commencement ceremony. The fee to participate in the commencement ceremony covers the cost of your cap and gown, honor cords, and degree or certificate cover (if applicable).
