Additional Medical Benefits

With Capital Rx, you can pick up your prescription drugs at over 60,000 retail pharmacies.

If you are prescribed a 90-day prescription for maintenance medications (e.g. long-term conditions like arthritis, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol), you can fill your prescription at retail pharmacies or through mail service. Along with the convenience of having your prescriptions delivered to you, the benefit to using mail service is a smaller cost—you'll pay two 30-day copays instead of three for your 90-day supply.

MinuteClinic is a walk-in clinic located inside select CVS Pharmacy and Target stores that treats a variety of illnesses, injuries and conditions. MinuteClinic providers can also administer vaccines and write prescriptions when medically appropriate.

With medical insurance through Maricopa Community Colleges, you and your dependents get access to convenient, local care at a MinuteClinic location nearby at no cost.

Banner Nurse Now offers free healthcare advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 844-259-9494.

With Maricopa Community Colleges medical benefits, you and your dependents gain access to a team of experienced nursing staff available to help with immediate healthcare questions. Banner Nurse Now nurses can give you advice for care at home or help you determine if you should seek urgent or emergency services. Our nurses can also assist in finding nearby locations that offer the level of care that may be necessary.

In addition to Banner Nurse Now, Maricopa Community Colleges uses the text-based 98point6 service, so your health is always in the palm of your hand—with no appointment needed. Whether you’re feeling unwell or have a health-related question, simply sign in and text with a primary care physician right from your phone. Traveling or relocating? We've got you—98point6 has you covered nationwide.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is an account that you contribute money into from your paycheck before taxes are taken out. You’ll save money when you use it to pay for health and dependent care expenses. Since FSAs are pre-tax deductions from your paycheck, think of it as tax free spending on your healthcare and dependent care expenses.

With Maricopa Community Colleges’ FSA, employees can contribute up to their plan’s limit in pretax dollars from each paycheck. This full contribution is available to use at the start of the plan year to pay for eligible healthcare expenses such as copays, coinsurance and deductibles, dental and vision expenses, prescription medicine, and over-the-counter items.

In addition, employees can also contribute up to their plan’s limit for Dependent Care FSA. By doing this, funds are for employees’ dependent(s) age 12 or younger or a spouse or dependent incapable of self-care. This FSA pays for eligible child and adult care expenses such as day care, preschool and nursery school, in-home aid, and more.

Basic and Supplemental Life Insurance

Maricopa Community Colleges offers $20,000 in MetLife basic life insurance for each eligible employee at no cost. In addition, we offer supplemental life insurance on a voluntary, employee-paid basis. Supplemental life insurance coverage is portable, so if an employee leaves, they can take this coverage with them.

Please note:

  • Any elections of life insurance (outside of new employee enrollment) or an increase in coverage amounts require Evidence of Insurability via a Statement of Health and is subject to approval by MetLife.
  • If your coverage requires an EOI, MetLife will send you an email with directions on how to complete the Statement of Health (SOH) process.
  • Due to IRS rules, the premiums you pay for coverage above $50,000 are taxable as imputed income to you.

Basic and Supplemental Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

Through MetLife, our accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) plans cover losses employees (or covered dependents) suffer as a direct result of an accidental bodily injury that occurs while covered by the plan. Like our life insurance plans, we provide this at no cost to employees.

We offer $15,000 for each eligible employee and dependent coverage or additional coverage may be purchased during an annual open enrollment for up to $500,000 in individual or family coverage.

These benefits include:

  • 100% of the amount of coverage purchased in the event of accidental loss of life, loss of both feet, both hands, sight in both eyes, or loss of both speech and hearing in both ears.
  • 70% for accidental loss of one limb.
  • 50% for accidental loss of one hand, one foot, sight in one eye or loss of speech or hearing in both ears.

Retirement Plans

Maricopa Community Colleges is a participating employer in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), which administers a pension plan, long-term disability plan, retiree health insurance plan, and other benefits to members.

In addition, all employees, regardless of ASRS eligibility, are eligible to participate in our Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA) retirement savings plans, regardless of full/part time or temporary status.

Compare Retirement Plans

All Maricopa Community Colleges employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) if you work 20 or more hours per week for at least 20 weeks in a fiscal year. Exceptions include student workers and F1, J1, M1, or Q1 visa holders.

ASRS is a defined benefit 401(a) plan. This provides a guaranteed lifelong pension benefit at retirement. The cost is based on the current contribution rate, which is set by the ASRS for each fiscal year. The contribution rate is applied to your gross wages each paycheck, and that amount is deducted and remitted to ASRS. Your contributions are matched by Maricopa Community Colleges at 100%, by law.

ASRS benefits are calculated by formulas that consider when you became an ASRS member, how much time you worked and contributed to the ASRS, and what your average wages were within the last 10 years before retirement.

Visit the ASRS website for a comprehensive view of ASRS for new and prospective members.

TSA plans available are 403(b), Roth 403(b), and 457(b) defined contribution plans. Employees may select from a list of authorized investment providers. You may start, stop, suspend, or change your TSA participation at any time throughout the year, only subject to payroll processing deadlines.

There are pros and cons to different types of TSA plans. Both 403(b) and 457(b) plans accept contributions pre-tax, but Roth 403(b) plan contributions have already been taxed. Maricopa Community Colleges employees may choose any plan and open an account with any company on the list.

The amount you contribute is up to you, but there are maximum annual limits set by the IRS. There is a higher maximum limit for those who are age 50 or more, to allow those closer to retirement age to “catch up” on contributions.

Participation is completely optional and voluntary. There is no matching contribution from Maricopa Community Colleges, so no direct benefits are lost if you choose not to participate.
